Back to Horatio's Life

In our family there has long existed the legend (for lack of a better word) that the little town of Malcom, Iowa, located today in Poweshiek County on Interstate 80, was named after our Malcom ancestors.  The story persists that at one time the Malcoms operated a trading post near the current location of Malcom.  Our Malcom ancestors lived in the area of Tama County, located just north of Poweshiek County and came to live there in the middle 1800s.

Here is a time table listing the Malcoms who lived in Tama Co. and when.  I have shown their age and their survival skills when they arrive in Iowa.

The reader may ask here, what is the point of all this information in the above chart?  My purpose is to show that the Malcoms who came to Tama County were equipped to be true pioneers.  They were not super heroes but they certainly possessed adventurous characters, fearless in the face of the unknown, knowledgeable and skilled in wilderness survival methods.  Lastly, they were hard working pragmatists seeking prosperity in a land of infinite opportunity.
