Descendants of Freedom Malcom and Noah Crossman, III
Generation No. 1
NOAH CROSSMAN,III was born 17 Apr 1792 in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, the son of Noah Crossman II. (Born 1752 and died 1842) and Huldah Hayden. His father was a Revolutionary War veteran and a maker of wooden ware and measures in the town of Sutton. Noah III died 18 August 18, 1843 (age 52) in Slatersville (Now North Smithfield), Providence Co., Rhode Island. He married FREEDOM MALCOM on 16 Jul 1816 in Millbury, Massachusetts, the daughter of MICHAEL MALCOM and LUCY CHASE. She was born 15 Jun 1797 in New Salem, Massachusetts and is named after her mother's sister. She died April 17, 1840 (age 44) in Slatersville (Now North Smithfield), Providence, Co, Rhode Island.
Noah III's father and grandfather are are skilled as metal workers, blacksmiths and scythe makers and apparently the family prospers. Noah may have worked with his father and grandfather or inherited a water privilege to operate a scythe shop on the Ramshorn Stream near Sutton, Massachusetts just 5 miles southwest of Millbury. See page 259 from the Centennial History of Millbury, published 1915. The family is listed on the Millbury, Massachusetts census records in 1820 and 1830. But the economy in New England takes a turn for the worst and in December, 1829 a suit is brought against Noah by a Nehemiah Chase from Sutton to recover $224.28 in debts. (Incidently, this Nehemiah Chase (d.31 Dec 1833) is the great-great-great grandson of Aquila Chase the II while Noah's mother-in-law, Lucy Chase Malcom, is the the great-great grand daughter of the same man. Also, our Noah is 1st cousin to Stephen Crossman who marries Mrs. Sukey (Susan) Marble Chase, the wife of Captain Abner Chase, the son of this Nehemiah Chase. Captain Abner Chase dies at age 42 of consumption on June 25, 1825, Stephen Crossman marries Sukey on March 1, 1830.) Noah's property is seized by the sheriff to partially settle the debt. On the 1830 census record, Freedom's mother, Lucy Chase Malcom, in her 80s, apparently still lives with the family. The family leaves the area soon after this and moves to Slatersville, (Now North Smithfield) Rhode Island, which is less than 20 miles south and east of Millbury. They take 7 of their 8 children with them. Their first female child named "Emeline" had already died in 1822 in Millbury at age 1½. Sometime after 1830 Lucy moves back to Orange, Mass. We do not know why she made this decision. Perhaps Lucy wanted to live near to her sister Sarah or other relatives in Orange.
Noah and Freedom are both buried in Buxton Cemetery, North Smithfield, Providence, Co., Rhode Island.

◄ This beautiful photo was taken in Rhode Island by Donna Meszaros. It shows the graves of (Center row, left to right) Noah Crossman (1792-1843), Emeline Crossman (1825-1842), Freedom Crossman (1797-1840) and Lucy Crossman (? we could not read her stone?).
