Here I am at the gate of the Buxton Cemetery in Rhode Island and very happy to be there. Greg and I, both being from the Midwest where all lands are sectioned off in squares and the roads are laid straight in cardinal directions, found it challenging to be in "foreign country" where none of the roads run in straight lines. Also, the road signage is somewhat lacking or nonexistent. We bought very good maps. Cemetery signage was good though.

It was here at Buxton that I discovered a cemetery custom long abandoned in later cemeteries in the Midwest. It was the "footstone". I had heard of them before but never had seen one. All the Crossman graves had both headstones and footstones in this old cemetery
Here below is a 2007 photo which clearly shows the headstones and the footstones on the Crossman graves. Below that are close-ups of the Freedom and Noah headstones and of Noah's footstone in the center indicated by "N.C". I apologize for the "fuzzy" photos. I guess we still had our camera on "landscape".
